Turquoise was one of the first gemstones ever to be mined and is famed for its intense colour, which ranges from green to sky blue. The colour variations are due to the amounts of copper or iron present. Some turquoise is found with veining present and this sometimes adds value to the gemstone if the veining is particularly good. As turquoise is a soft, fragile and porous gemstone, it is often treated with wax or resin to improve its stability. Turquoise is porous, so contact with liquid. oils or even perspiration should be avoided.
