Mother of Pearl is also known as nacre. This hard layer of mostly calcium carbonate, is secreted by some molluscs such as oysters, and lines the inside of their shells. It has a beautiful iridesscent and durable substance, which has been used for more than a thousand years for utensils, buttons, inlays and jewellery. Only one in 10,000 oysters hold a natural pearl inside.

Black lip mother of pearl is taken from marine cultured black lipped oysters. Some of the lower grades of mother of pearl are dyed, not only to cover their imperfections, but to make them look equally attractive.
